What is MOMs+?

MOMs+ is a maternal overdose prevention program focused on helping birthing hospitals provide equitable access to treatment and recovery for perinatal patients with substance use disorder (SUD). The program builds upon the national AIM patient safety bundle, equipping birthing hospital clinicians with the knowledge and tools necessary to effectively support perinatal patients with SUDs throughout their pregnancy and postpartum journey. The MOMs+ team of clinicians provides support through a hospital needs assessment, gap analysis, order set review, staff education, implementation plan, data-driven quality improvement, community outreach and referral, and other technical assistance.

Working collaboratively with key partners, MOMs+ is creating a common framework, implementation recommendations, and education plan for birthing hospitals to improve maternal and infant outcomes. Hospitals and organizations engaged in MOMs+ have access to tailored technical assistance, education, subject matter experts, and continual process improvement to improve care for pregnant and postpartum people affected by substance use.

Dying for care?

Ending the Stigma of Addiction for Pregnant Persons

Suicide and unintended overdose are leading causes of maternal mortality around the nation, accounting for almost a third of pregnancy and postpartum deaths. Substance use and use disorders can significantly impact the quality of life for pregnant and postpartum individuals and their families. Healthcare systems and birthing hospitals should be leading communities in efforts to provide wraparound evidence-based care to these vulnerable patients, but many at-risk individuals are not accessing or receiving the care that they desperately need and deserve. In this segment titled "Dying for Care," we hear from moms in recovery, how their stories could have been different, and how we as a healthcare system can and must do better.

By breaking the cycle of stigma, every birthing hospital can become a place where perinatal patients with SUDs feel comfortable receiving care. Embracing the principles of MOMs+, through treatment, community and peer connection, will result in increased perinatal care and safer pregnancies for mom and baby.
